Heart healthy eating on your summer vacation

Heart healthy eating on your summer vacation!

Heading up to the cottage this weekend or going away for your summer vacation? Here's how to keep heart healthy eating on the menu.

At the cottage

  • Try salmon or halibut on the BBQ instead of burgers. Everyone will love the fresh summer taste of tarragon and parsley used in Halibut with Lemon, Shallots and Herbs.

  • Serve a green salad every day. Mix and match any ingredients you have on hand. Try adding leftover grilled chicken, cherry tomatoes, roasted red peppers, toasted nuts, or even a can of beans (drained and rinsed first).
  • Stay cool with homemade heart healthy desserts. Make your own frozen juice pops using 100% fruit juice. Or try a frozen banana drizzled with melted dark chocolate.
  • Keep a jug of cold water in the fridge. Add slices of orange, lemon or lime to flavour the water. It's a refreshing alternative to soft drinks.

At the vacation resort

  • Most resorts have buffet food stations, which allow you to custom order your food. Ask for a pasta stir fry with plenty of vegetables and a tomato-based sauce. Choose baked or steamed fish instead of fried meats.
  • Choose whole grains. Look for whole grain breads, buns, pasta and cereals, and dishes made with whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, barley or kamut.
  • Enjoy fresh fruit for dessert. If you're travelling to an exotic location, try the local fresh, seasonal fruit.
  • Remind yourself that you don't have to eat everything at the buffet. With so many choices, it's easy to overeat. Start with small amounts of food. If you would like second helpings, go for the vegetable dishes or salad. Watch the amount of sauce and dressing you add.

Have a heart healthy summer and a great holiday!
