Gifts and gadgets for movers and shakers

If any of the people on your holiday gift list are active types — or want to be — consider a gift that will keep them moving all year long. Who knows? You may find this list so inspiring that you decide to do a little holiday shopping for yourself.

  • For the golfer. A golf watch can mean not carrying paper and pencil across the greens to track scores and stats. The latest models are "wrist top computers" that improve performance by analyzing the wearer's swing tempo, rhythm and speed.
  • For the walker. A heart rate monitor helps to gauge the intensity of each workout, by transmitting data gathered from a chest strap to a wristwatch, as well as measuring distance and time.
  • For the runner. Body monitoring systems utilize a tiny chip attached to the running shoe that sends data to a special wristwatch to track speed and distance.
  • For the cyclist. A good set of light-weight nylon panniers allow the eco-friendly cyclist to cart groceries home or take a change of clothes when biking to work.
  • For the city slicker. Fold-up sneakers or ballet-style flats tuck into a bag and can be quickly changed into, making it easier to do lunch-time errands or run for the bus.
  • For the mom-to-be or new mom. DVDs of yoga and pilates workouts just for her (and baby), so she can exercise at home without adapting moves or making adjustments to her pre-baby workout programs.
  • For the swimmer. A waterproof case for his or her MP3 player provides rich underwater sound to enhance the life aquatic.
  • For the pilates lover. An instability cushion makes almost anything more difficult — and therefore more effective as an exercise — including standing, sitting or talking on the phone.
  • For the frequent flyer. Collapsible travel dumb bells that can be filled with water in a hotel room make it possible to maintain a weight program even while on the road.
